Our Principles
Nightline treats all its callers with respect and utilises five core principles to make sure that whatever you want to talk about, or gain information on, is handled in just the right way. Our 5 core principles are:
1. Confidentiality
We offer a confidential listening and information service. You can reveal as much or as little information as you like, while feeling reassured that it all stays confidential within nightline.
2. Non-directive and non-advisory
Our volunteers recognise that everyone and every situation is different, so we won't direct or advise you as we would rather help you to make a decision that's right for you. We won't steer you towards any particular solution or seek to solve your problems through advice. We give you an objective caring space to work things out for yourself and make decisions for yourself, putting you back in control of the situation and your decisions.
3. Anonymous
You can reveal as much or as little information as you like about yourself, and our volunteers will never push you for more information. Our volunteers are there to talk through any issues you want to talk about, and while they are not shy, don't be surprised if they would prefer to talk about you rather than themselves.
4. Non-judgmental
Nightline and its volunteers are an independent student group with no religious, philosophical or political bias. We accept and respect the views of all our callers and will never criticise or judge, providing a safe and supportive environment to discuss issues without prejudice.
5. Dedication
All of our volunteers are dedicated to the service and to offering you the best possible support and information. Our volunteers are trained to actively listen to anything you want to talk about and can provide factual and reliable information. We are dedicated to caller self-determination and can give details of relevant professional advice sources.
Our principles mean that your call will be dealt with in confidence and anonymously. We would never push you to provide us with information or details that you are unhappy in providing. We are here to listen and support you, but we can't just wave a magic wand.
