19:00 Wargaming & Roleplaying Taster Session
- When
- Monday 19 September, 19:00
- Where
- Drama Rehearsal Room, Main Arts Building
- What
- Wargaming is a form of strategy game involving metal or plastic miniatures that the players can buy and paint. The players build up their armies and battle it out by moving their models over the table/battlefield according to the numbers shown on their dice. Dice rolls also decide attack and defence moves, and the rules for these are often to be found in large, published volumes. The most popular game universes are Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop. Some BWRPS members also collect the constructible ship strategy game “Pirates”. Others may play collectable card games in-between wargame or battle campaigns.
Roleplaying is a hobby that involves a great imagination. Players take on the personality and strengths of their character (most often decided against a number on a dice), and interact with each other to form the plot of an adventure thread decided upon by the “Games Master”. The Games Master takes on the roles of the characters the players meet, and guides the story as a whole. There are no winners or losers in roleplay, only heroes, villains and all shades in between. Many published rulebooks and systems exist to cater for all tastes, from historical to futuristic but perhaps the best (commercially) known is still “Dungeons and Dragons”.

Out-of-work writer Eddie Morra’s (Bradley Cooper) rejection by girlfriend Lindy (Abbie Cornish) confirms his belief that he has zero future. That all vanishes the day an old friend introduces Eddie to NZT, a designer pharmaceutical that makes him laser focused and more confident than any man alive. Now on an NZT-fueled odyssey, everything Eddie’s read, heard or seen is instantly organized and available to him. As the former nobody rises to the top of the financial world, he draws the attention of business mogul Carl Van Loon (De Niro), who sees this enhanced version of Eddie as the tool to make billions. 19:30 Ceilidh
- When
- Friday 23 September, 19:30
- Where
- JP Hall
- What
- Well, first of all, what is the difference between a Ceilidh, a Barn Dance and a Twmpath? Several theories exist, but this is ours. Barn Dances tend to be a little more reserved than Ceilidhs - the band maybe of a more conventional line-up, sometimes sitting on the stage, and playing mainly traditional tunes. Some people associate Barn Dances with American style hoe-downs, which are more like Country & Western events, but a British barn dance uses mainly British country dance tunes. A Ceilidh is generally regarded to be a more lively affair, with a few songs and tunes maybe thrown in. Ceilidh bands often stand (or even dance!) on the stage, the tunes are frequently self-penned or up-tempo arrangements of traditional tunes. A Twmpath is probably both of the above with more emphasis on Welsh tunes and dances. All the above variations are great fun, the dances themselves are similar, it’s just a matter of personal choice.
