How to write a manifesto

Writing an election manifesto needn’t be something to tear your hair out about. Essentially, your manifesto should state what you would plan to do in your time of office, and what changes you would make. It isn’t an excuse to bad mouth your opposition, or make unrealistic promises. Take some time before you write it to think about what you believe you can achieve and what the voters would respond to.

Some top tips for writing your manifesto:

Be concise and use clear language. Avoid long, complicated words – you won’t win awards for being clever and you might just alienate important voters.

Think carefully about layout and remember that the finished manifesto will be bilingual. Try to design it bilingually from the start.

Set out your goals for your time in office and ensure they are realistic & achievable – officers are answerable to the student body who might decide to ask why you’ve not managed to rebuild the Union building.

Your manifesto is about you and not about your opponents. Avoid discrediting and disrespecting others as it is not professional and ultimately it could lead to a libel lawsuit!

Be relevant. Think about what is needed for the role and focus on that. Instances where you have shown leadership, tenacity, and tact would indicate to voters your suitability for the role.

Stick to the word limit. They are the rules, and, after all, voters will want to read what you have to say. Think carefully about how to get your main points across.

Be creative and inspiring. However, there are rules so make sure that you are not overstepping the mark.

Ni ddylai ysgrifennu maniffesto etholiadol beri gormod o ofid i chi. Yn y bôn, dylai eich maniffesto nodi’r hyn y byddech yn ei wneud yn ystod eich cyfnod yn y swydd, a pha newidiadau y byddech yn eu cyflwyno. Nid yw’n esgus i ddweud pethau cas am eich gwrthwynebwyr, na gwneud addewidion afrealistig. Cyn i chi fynd ati i ysgrifennu unrhyw beth, treuliwch ychydig o amser yn meddwl am yr hyn rydych yn gobeithio ei gyflawni a beth fyddai’r pleidleiswyr yn ymateb iddo.

Cynghorion call ar lunio eich maniffesto:

Byddwch yn gryno a defnyddiwch iaith glir. Ceisiwch osgoi geiriau hir a chymhleth – fyddwch chi ddim yn ennill gwobrau am fod yn glyfar ac mae yna berygl y byddwch yn codi gwrychyn rhai o’r pleidleiswyr pwysig.
Meddyliwch yn ofalus ynglŷn â’r diwyg a chofiwch y bydd y maniffesto gorffenedig yn ddwyieithog. Ceisiwch ei ddylunio’n ddwyieithog o’r dechrau.
Nodwch eich amcanion ar gyfer eich cyfnod yn y swydd a gwnewch yn sicr eu bod yn realistig ac o fewn cyrraedd – mae’r swyddogion yn atebol i gorff y myfyrwyr, a all benderfynu holi pam na lwyddoch chi i ailadeiladu adeilad yr Undeb.
Mae eich maniffesto yn ymwneud â chi, ac nid eich gwrthwynebwyr. Dylech osgoi bwrw amheuon ar eraill a’u hamharchu, gan nad yw hynny’n broffesiynol, ac yn y pen draw gallai arwain at achos llys am enllib!
Byddwch yn berthnasol. Meddyliwch am beth sydd ei angen ar gyfer y rôl a chanolbwyntiwch ar hynny. Os gallwch feddwl am achosion ble y bu i chi ddangos arweiniad, dycnwch a doethineb, gallai hynny arwyddo i bleidleiswyr eich bod yn gymwys ar gyfer y swydd.
Cadwch at yr uchafswm geiriau. Dyma yw’r rheolau, ac wedi’r cyfan, bydd y pleidleiswyr angen darllen yr hyn sydd gennych i’w ddweud. Meddyliwch yn ofalus sut i fynegi eich prif bwyntiau.
Byddwch yn greadigol ac ysbrydolwch. Ond cofiwch, mae yna reolau, felly gwnewch yn siŵr nad ydych yn mynd yn rhy bell.
