Advice for course reps

How to get involved as a course rep

What is a course rep?
Course reps are students who are elected, by their peers, to represent the views of students on their course at staff-student meetings. So basically they are there to act as an intermediary between staff and students – while giving everyone a feeling of greater ownership of their department and the university!
Why do we have them?
It all sounds a bit cheesy but we have course reps to make sure that democracy happens – basically this means that everyone has the chance to have their say and change the quality of teaching and learning within their education here at Bangor. Course reps are there to ensure that everyone is represented and has their say at school and college levels.
Who can become a course rep?
Any student can become a course rep – and that’s the fun of it. It really does not matter where you are from, your age, whether you are an undergrad or postgrad, or anything else – everyone has the chance to become a course rep as after all who knows more about your course and department than you! To find out how to get involved select the ‘How do I become a course rep? Is it too late?’ section.
What exactly does a course rep do?
A course rep provides consistent, well-informed opinion about the quality of teaching and learning on their courses, and on the overall student experience here at Bangor.
They do this by:
  • Gaining feedback (good and bad) from others on their course
  • Communicating student feedback to staff
  • Attending and getting actively involved in staff-student meetings
  • Working with other course reps to make sure that issues are followed up
  • Feeding back information from meetings to students
  • Attending Students’ Union forum meetings and council
  • Engaging with the Students’ Union to keep them informed and to gain their help and support
  • Referring students on to relevant staff/sabbatical officers if there is a problem that is not course-related or is too big for them to deal with
How much time will I have to commit to being a course rep?
Firstly, you will have to attend the course representative training (if you can make it) which runs for two hours in the middle of the first semester and gives you all the information you will need to be a super course rep; as well as meeting other course reps from other departments. After the training you will be expected to make yourself known to students and regularly gauge their opinions. You will also be asked to attend course rep meetings that take place at least once each semester – these are really important to attend, as this is the point where you get to tell your department what they are doing well and what they need to improve upon. Other than this you can spend as much or as little time being a course rep as you like!
If you want to dedicate more time to being a course rep then each department also selects one rep to attend the Students’ Union Course Rep Forum, which takes place twice a year, and is your opportunity to tell the Students’ Union and other school reps about good and bad practice within your school/college.
What’s in it for me?
Well, course reps are volunteers – for the greater good – to help inform their school and college about any problems that are faced by their fellow students. But there is more to it than that warm, fuzzy, just volunteered feeling – you also get the chance to meet tonnes of new people from your course and make some great new friends.
You also gain a huge number of transferable skills from being a course rep; including: public speaking, negotiation, good meeting practices, advocacy, communication with others, problem solving, team skills, time management – to name but a few! All these skills can also be put on your CV.
What are the benefits to the university and my department?
As part of the University’s quality assurance system, your school is obligated to provide the opportunity for student feedback and at Bangor we do this through student course representatives. The School benefits from the course reps feedback by being able to identify and react more quickly to potential problems, as well as finding out what is going well within courses – ensuring that they have the information they need to provide their students with the best possible course environment.
The University also benefits from having course reps, or ‘Learner Voices’, as they are assessed on their level of student involvement by the Quality Assurance Agency, as well as helping the University set its policy and strategy.
How do I become a course rep? Is it too late now?
Course reps are usually elected by their course within the first few weeks of Semester 1 – contact your school to find out when this happens and if it has happened yet. Once you have been elected by your peers you are a course rep! It’s that easy and its never too late to get involved within your school – just contact them.
